Assessment of the View That Mass Media Perpetuates...
Assessment of the View That Mass Media Perpetuates Stereotypes of Gender In this essay I will be writing about the way in which the mass media reinforces the idea of stereotypes of gender. The mass media has existed for many hundreds of years, and its role is to socialise us into different stereotypes such as Gender and Race. Gender is perhaps the basic category we use for sorting human beings. Essential ideas that we get about our own identityââ¬â¢s come from someone elseââ¬â¢s perception of how a female/male should act/look. There are two very different ideas about how females and males should act. Males are looked upon as dominant and emotionless whereas woman are considered to be very emotional and areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In 1985 a study was up taken by a male media reporter and the study was based on music videos shown on MTV. They took 300 clips and it explored the position of females in them. Conclusive evidence was then produced that woman were either used as symbols of male dominance or sex symbols. Another idea that was created in 1990 by another male called Wolfe was called the beauty myth. The beauty myth apparently encourages woman to worry excessively about their body images and spend far too much time feel apprehensive about their appearances and in some cases of woman they even feel inferior to other ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠peopleââ¬â¢s images. A study of advertisements in male magazines and female magazines begun in 1983 and it studied 1200 adverts from both male and female magazines. Fergusonââ¬â¢s results showed that 1179 articles in womanââ¬â¢s magazines dealt with issues such as food. This shows the high level of pressure placed on females to work harder on their appearances then males. Due to the male gaze many woman have begun arguing that lots of eating disorders occur because of the pressure woman face to look good. It does appear that females have every right to be aggrieved about this issue as the number of adverts which deal with food are huge compar ed to menââ¬â¢s magazines where there are only 15. Kuhnian Model Free Essays
KUHNIAN MODEL According to many science is a steady progression of accrual of new ideas but to Kuhn science was as a result of occasional revolutionary explosions of new knowledge whereby each revolution was triggered by introduction of new ways of thought that were so large that he called them paradigms. These paradigms according to Kuhn were supposed to generally recognize scientific achievements, present model problems and solutions for group of researchers. A paradigm is supposed to describe; * How the outcome of most scientific investigations should be interpreted. We will write a custom essay sample on Kuhnian Model or any similar topic only for you Order Now * What is to be observed and scrutinized? The kind of questions that are supposed to be asked and probed for answers in relation to this subject. The Kuhnian model consists of five main steps which include: * Prescience- it has no workable paradigm to guide its work successfully. * Normal science- it is a normal step where the field has a scientifically based model of understanding a paradigm that works * Model drift- here the model of understanding starts to drift. This is due to accumulation of anomalies and events the model cannot explain. * Model crisis- the previous step becomes so excessive the model is broken. It can therefore no longer serve as a reliable guide to problem solving. Any attempts to patch the model up to work will fail hence the field is in anguish. * Model revolution-it immediately becomes considerable when serious candidates for a new model emerge; it is referred as a revolution because the new model is so drastically poles apart from the previous one. * Paradigm change-here the field changes from the old to the new paradigm because a new one emerges. This new paradigm then becomes the normal science and the khunian model is complete. HOW IT WORKS The new fields normally begin in prescience where they have begun to focus on a problem area but are not yet capable of making major advances. Working techniques that later provide a model of understanding eventually works hence this will put the field in normal science step. In this step it takes longer. As time passes by new questions arise but the current model of understanding cannot answer this puts it in the model drift step. The model crisis step is reached later if the anomalies appear and the model cannot be patched up to explain them unfortunately it tends to fail due to guesswork and intuition. At long last the model revolution begins. It is a revolution because the new model is a new paradigm. Itââ¬â¢s radically different from the old paradigm. This makes the believers in both paradigms not to communicate well. The paradigm change step begins when the new paradigm is settled on by a few influential supporters. After field transitions from the old to the new paradigm occur the old paradigm is sufficiently replaced and becomes the fieldââ¬â¢s new normal science. Guess what happens next? The cycle begins again because our knowledge about the world is never complete. References The structure of Scientific Revolutions- Thomas. S. Kuhn How to cite Kuhnian Model, Papers

Bob Marley Essay Abstract Example For Students
Bob Marley Essay Abstract Bicameral legislature- A congress made up of two houses. In the U.S. it is the senate and the House of Representatives. Constitutional convention agreed to a bicameral legislation. Congressional Sessions- Each term of congress starts on January 3 of odd numbered years and lasts for two years. Sessions- a meeting that takes place twice in congress and usually lasts for most of the year. Congress remains in session until its members vote to adjourn. After adjournment the president may call congress back into meeting as a special session. Membership of the House- a total of 435 members make up the house of representatives. Seats are allotted to each state and the number of seats that state is allowed to have is based on its population. Every state is entitled to at least one seat no matter how small the population is. To qualify to be a member of the house you must be at least 25 years of age, a resident of the US for 7 years and a legal resident of the state you represent.(Usually live in the district they represent.) Terms of the house are for two years. Representation and reapportionment- the census bureau takes a national census, or population count, every 10 years to assign representation according to population. The population of each state determines the new number of representatives, which is called reapportionment. Congressional Redistricting- The process of setting up new district lines after reapportionment has been completed. Gerrymandering- means that the political party controlling the state government draws a districts boundaries to gain an advantage in elections. The term gerrymandering can be traced to Elbridge Gerry, a governor of Massachusetts. Membership of the Senate- The senate is composed of two senators from each state, thus each state is represented equally. Todays senators includes 100 members?2 from each of the 50 states. To qualify as a senator you must at least 30 years old, a citizen of the US for 9 years, and a legal resident of the State they represent. All voters of each state elect senators at-large, or statewide. Unlike a representative of the house a senator serves his or her term for six years, inducting a new senator every two years. A congressmans pay must follow the 27 amendment, which says that the salary voted on by congress will not be in effect till the next session. Exclusion- the right of congress not to seat a member inducted by a majority vote. Censure- a formal disapproval of a members actions. Characteristics- most of the members of congress are lawyers. The others usually in business, banking, and education. Incumbents- Those already in office that win reelection. Political action committees- Provide substantial campaign funds, usually supporting incumbents. Incumbents are successful in reelection because it is easier to raise funds, can represent districts that have been gerrymandered in their partys favor, incumbents are better known to voters, and they use their position and office staff to help solve problems for voters. Constituents- the people in a district represented. Caucus- a closed meeting. Majority Leaders- The speakers top assistant. Their job is to help plan the partys legislative program, steer important bills through the house, and make sure the chairpersons of the many committees finish work on bills important to the party. Whips are assistant floor leaders. The whips job is to watch how majority-party-members intend to vote on bills, to persuade them to vote as their party wishes, and to see that party members are present to vote. Bills- A proposed law. Not actually a law until congress votes and passes it, then the president must sign it. To introduce a bill members drop their idea into a box called a Hopper. After the bill is introduced the speaker of the house sends it to the appropriate committee for study, discussion, and review. .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 , .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .postImageUrl , .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 , .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:hover , .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:visited , .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:active { border:0!important; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:active , .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173 .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4cc30f273127d9059f2b62a2bfc77173:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: On February 6, 1895, George Herman Ruth Jr. was th Essay Bills are then put onto the house calendars.
